In the age of technology, social platforms have become a preferred method of reaching consumers. However, video content on these platforms does not always communicate effectively. To create effective video content for social media, there are a few things one should always keep in mind.
Length
On social media platforms, people tend to scroll, swipe, and like rapidly. Because there is such an inundation of content on these platforms, it is important to keep your video advertisements short and sweet. If the point does not get across in the few seconds, the viewer will likely lose interest and move on. Video content tailored to social media should never exceed 20 seconds. You should also always research the maximum clip length on the platform your plan on posting on, as your video may be cut off if it exceeds the limit.
Quick cuts
To create high impact content in such limited time, you should use quick cuts of content stitched together. Viewers tend to lose interest on continuous shots, so if you are going to use one continuous shot, find ways to spice it up — ideally, have other things pop up on the screen, such as animations or text.
Sound and Text
People often look at social media in public spaces where they do not play videos with sound. If sound is a key aspect of your video, your messages are not likely to be received by the consumer. Rather, you should use abundant text on screen to get your message across. Make sure this text is really visible — it if it is unclear, viewers may not want to put in the work of deciphering it. The most fun fonts and colors you use in this text, the better.
Frame size
Often, smaller companies who are responsible for their own social media content fail to consider frame size, leaving their video advertisements cut off or awkwardly spaced on most platforms. When creating content for social media, always keep in mind the frame size of the platform on which you will be advertising. If it is an instagram post, make it 1×1, if it is an instagram or facebook story, make it 4×5. Having content tailored to the screen size shows consumers that your brand is polished.
Today, it is more important than ever to tailor social media content to the platform. Using these formatting tips will help you keep your content fresh, and engage more viewers.
